Venesections

Venesections are indicated for patients with Hereditary Haemochromatisis (HH), Polycythemia Vera (PV), Porphyria and other forms of iron overload. Toowoomba Haematology offers venesections to eligible patients in rooms and also in the St Andrew's day unit Toowoomba.

Age and other restrictions have recently affected patients having venesections via some pathology providers and Lifeblood (formerly Red Cross). Toowoomba Haematology is happy to accept patients transitioning from the Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology (SNP) venesection program and from other venesection providers. Patients will need a referral from their regular doctor. Please contact our reception to discuss the transition process.

Patients without private health insurance

The iron venesection service is available to patients without private health insurance. As the service is provided on an outpatient basis, no hospital admission fee is payable.

Fees for venesection service
  • For venesections only - monitoring of their condition undertaken by referring GP, haematologist or gastroenterologist

  • Where Toowoomba Haematology is monitoring and managing the underlying condition
Venesections are bulk billed, but the regular haematology consult fee applies.
